Motivation: How To Achieve A Goal While Avoiding Procrastination

Setting goals and ultimately failing them, we've all been there. For me, I'm a procrastinator. If there was an Olympics for procrastinating I'd probably be the shoo-in winner (I stayed up until 4:00am to finish my homework), but then again, aren't we all? (In an addition I hardly have the motivation to actually complete the ambition).
I've been wanting to write a novel and despite the fact that I find pleasure in writing, I have been putting it off for...(let's see, carry the three, subtract the two, divide it by six...), two years now. Truth be told, starting this blog has been equivalent to crawling through quick sand; so, a novel is definitely one of the farthest yet nearest thing on my mind. There are several goals I've been wanting to accomplish for a while now, and I came up with a game plan that can ultimately aid me in achieving my (realistic) ambitions. Hopefully, it will assist you in succeeding your objectives. So, let's get started.

1) Announce your goal (and your promise to fulfil it) to every single person you know that you are going to achieve the goal you have set.
I am fully aware of how this sounds, but (if you're especially a person like me,) due to the fact that you are tempted to maintain your reputation in an addition to the factor that you are less likely to fail your target due to the fact that you are aware that you may disappoint the person that matters to you/whom you idolise. So, go crazy and post your aims on Facebook, make a video about it on Youtube, whatever you can do to declare your expectations to the world. The key to this tip is humans' urge to sustain their images (especially with today's social media) and the nature to exceed their loved ones'/idols' expectations (especially your parents). You are more likely to be motivated if you are reminded of the fact that you will disappoint someone truly important to you if you are to fail your statement. (By the way, I suggest walking up and down the neighbourhood with a megaphone).
Don't let procrastination and temporary lack
of motivation get into the way of your
dreams.

We sometimes give up on dreams due to schedules and the fact that we may never get around to it. Even in the mist of your busy, hectic lives; ensure that you have time to wind down and dedicate your time to the passion you have. You only live once, make a use of the chance.
2) Set the goal as your alarm
The idea is to record yourself screaming/saying the goal you would need to accomplish and set it as your everyday alarm. It is proven that what is often heard the first thing in the morning in a repetitive manner is often drilled into one's head. Make your goal URGENT.
YOUR DREAMS DEPEND ON YOU

3) Write the particular goal on every single surface of your house.
Your bathroom mirror, your television screen, your pillow case, whatever it is that will constantly remind you of the due goal. The frequent notes will trigger your brain to actually reach the goal. Note: Do not and I REPEAT, DO NOT erase those notes until you have ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOAL. Warning: You will be tempted to abandon the notes and neglect them, as well as erase them (with the urge to clean your house or simply no longer want to persevere to reach that goal).  Really, try to make your notes semi-permanent, (especially if you're a procrastinator) and restrict yourself from buying the solution until you have fulfilled your ambition {I suggest lipstick on mirrors, stick-on letters on computer and television screens, write your goal reminder with a Sharpie on your inner wrist or your forearm (even on your fingers), paint your ambitions (nail art) on your nails.
Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later. - Og Mandino

4) Listen to highly successful people's interviews and speeches while you sleep/work/commute.
This tip especially works for people with a competitive edge. For me, this tip is my personal favourite for it works for me best. The bait of this trick is others' success. You are more likely to be motivated if you are "surrounded" and influenced by highly successful people. The loophole is that with a competitive edge, you are convinced to "reach" the people's level of success (at least attempt). But nevertheless, you will (hopefully) be prompted to complete your goals.

5) Always remember the deadline by one week earlier/Designate a deadline
Don't ever do this
Even if your boss or teacher assigns the work that is not due for another two weeks, just write the deadline in your planner or reminders one week earlier. Once you've drilled that in your head, you are bound to do it one week. And even if you didn't finish it one week, you still have a safety net to fall on. However, make sure that you have convinced yourself that the deadline is in fact due a week earlier than its designated due date. (What I personally like to do is simply write all of the assignments on one paper (those that have similar due dates) without noting the deadlines and just have one large set deadline assigned for all of the tasks.) For goals: Set a deadline for yourself.

A goal without a plan is just a wish- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

6) Plan your goal
This one's pretty obvious. However, even if I did plan, I tend to stray away from it. So, the trick to gain motivation to actually carry out your action plan is to have a reward. The extreme alternate technique of this tip is to (if you are  food lover), have your fridge taped with the plan or if you are a bookworm, lock your bookcase until you have completed the plan (ask someone to hide the key for you) and so on. I suggest that your plan be divided into days (eg. Day 1: Write one chapter of the book, etc.) Remember, any goal is possible as long as it is realistic (no dragon wings or flying cloud kingdoms).

7) Lock yourself in a room
This is most probably the most insane idea out of all of them. And perhaps the most extreme as well. But the idea is to have one focus on the given task without any distractions. Simply take away all unnecessary objects, electronic devices or even people that may distract you and concentrate on the task at hand. I especially recommend this for those who has a hard time concentrating. But due to the fact that you are unable to be distracted by anything else besides your stationery, you are bound to stick to your work.
If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves- Thomas Edison

8) Search for child prodigies
This is a motivational method. It's actually inspired by personal "complaints" by people on Twitter and Facebook where they rave about child prodigies (newfound kids/teens with established success) and say "so and so is only 8 years old and they've already released an album! What were we doing at that age? Playing with Barbie dolls. #storyofmylife". So, if you read about child prodigies you are certain to be motivated. The key is to create temporary insecurity to form the boost of motivation. The more you're insecure, the more you are likely to work to be confident of yourself again. Accomplishment=Confidence. Basically.

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others. -Ayn Rand

9)Find the reason for your goal
Whether it is even just a little homework assignment or a huge project such as building a rocket; there is always a reason for your goal. So find that reason, and reason with yourself  why you had set that goal in the first place. Think of the consequences that may result of your goal. Fame? Money? Peace? (Here is a tip for those lazy students out there: homework= faster out of school= pursuing your dream= plus eating Cheetos on the couch and watching "Breaking Bad"). The reasons for your goals should motivate you (or at least force you from avoiding a severe consequence) or else, why do it in the first place?

10) Treat yourself to something exceptionally luxurious and special once you've accomplished
This is probably the oldest trick in the book, but it's proven to work. I mean, the post itself probably would't be complete without this strategy listed. A few of the luxuries I treat myself when I've accomplished a goal: eat a whole tub full of cup ice-cream, give myself an hour-3 hours (cutting myself from my computer, social networks, everyone) and simply curling up with a good book (I'll post a reading list/book recommendations in the near future) with tea, watch a marathon of television. (Leave in the comments below, what you to achieve a goal!) Basically, have a prize sitting for you at the finale.

Just admit it: The feeling of accomplishment is AWESOME.

Do not use these tips if your goals are intended for evil. Thank you.

An Introduction: Climbing Through A Mad, Mad Window

Hi! Welcome to my blog! As you wander through my personal writing universe, you may find various treasures spanning across diverse topics. I am extremely new to the blog world (feel free to give me constructive criticism, suggestions and recommendations in the comments down below!) and I trust that the tradition is to present the readers with an introduction!
I’m Emily, and I’m a person of many interests and aspects. One of which is, writing (One of my biggest dreams are to see my books proudly taking place on bookshelves). I’m an avid reader and music listener as well, and I plan to review books and music alike, on this blog. As a normal teenager, I’m into beauty and fashion (Like, did you see Bethany Mota’s new Aeropostale clothing collection?! That black and white dress is to die for, not to mention that cute little owl necklace! The girl’s got a killer fashion sense!) Which you may witness the evidence of this interest as you walk through my blog posts. Despite my teenager’s mind, I’m definitely one of those with childish interests (I secretly watch Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse and laugh over Spongebob Squarepants; shh!). However, on the other hand I’m one with an old soul, which may be evident as I explore more serious matters (world peace, Syria’s war, global warming, the controversy on Obamacare, etc.) and rave over the Etta’s James “At Last” (Not that Ariana Grande’s "The Way" doesn’t rock!). You may also find bits of odds and ends scattered through my Creation as well.

Well, I hope that you enjoyed this introduction and will be entertained by the blog posts to come! Thank you so much for reading this and I hope to see you in the blog posts to come; I’d be glad to take you on this journey with me as I explore the world around me through my eyes.

P.S.  I apologize for the long introduction! And don’t forget to comment and request any blog posts in the comment box down below.

XOXO,
Emily
